Brian Mathias

Although he grew up with a single-minded devotion to music, singer and guitarist Brian Mathias made his way to New York City to pursue mastery of a very different stringed instrument: the squash racquet. He discovered a proclivity for the obscure sport in that great bastion of all things obscure: college. Playing and teaching professionally eventually led him around the world before he realized that his future actually resided in the guitar case that had accompanied him on his travels.
Brian is currently performing his original music in the New York area with Martin Balik (bass), Rossen Nedelchev (drums), and Boyan Hristov (guitar). The group plans to record a full-length CD in 2009.
Of his influences, Brian says, "some of the usual suspects, plus a lot of folks you might not have heard (even if you've heard of them): Martin Sexton, Jesse de Natale, Jeff Buckley, Elza, J Mascis, Richard Julian, Ani Difranco..."
